BMW to put 1-Series coupé into Leipzig plant

July 2007

BMW will build the coupé version of 1-Series compact car at its Leipzig plant in Germany. The car will be the first to use BMW’s new four-cylinder diesel engine.

Leipzig will paint and assemble the coupé on the same lines as the three-door version 1-Series and the 3-Series saloon. The body-in-white facility builds dedicated components for each model. Pressings for the models are produced at different sites.

“The Coupé will be fitted with a new 2-litre diesel engine, which produces 150 kW (204 hp),” said BMW. “It is the world’s most powerful production four-cylinder diesel.”

Output at Leipzig will remain constant at between 650 to 700 vehicles a day. Some 3 Series production is moving to Regensburg plant.

The vehicle will also feature regenerative braking to achieve fuel economy of 5.2l/100km and CO2 emissions of 138 g/km.
