  Future trends in vehicle dynamics

June 2008

Volvo

Egbert Bakker, vehicle dynamics technical specialist

"We believe that if you feel safe you can have more fun. Preventive and dynamic safety features will enhance these characteristics. Active systems will be further enhanced and more closely integrated with the brakes, steering, suspension and powertrain offering new added value customer functions.

Volvo XC70: safety first

"The challenge will be to deal with the increased weight of hybrid variants. Further weight reduction of suspension components is a prerequisite in future system development. But the basic suspension still has to be able to support Volvo's driving dynamics DNA even without the support of these features. Active systems move boundaries and support driver actions and are not used to compensate.

"Controlled electric-power assisted steering systems will play an important role. These systems have improved dramatically in performance during the last years and show potential to enhance our safety DNA. Dampers with controlled characteristics and electrical parking brake will increase in volume."
