Nargess Shahmanesh-Banks drives the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring
Size and practicality is everything to an estate and the new generation 5 Series BMW Touring lives up to its number one function. The car is wider, longer and taller than its previous model, measuring at 4,843 mm in length and 1,846 mm in width. It can easily transport five adults and its 60:40 split rear seats allow for a maximum luggage space of 1,650 litres. With all five people onboard there is still a healthy 500 litres of boot space, an increase of 18 per cent on the previous model. Additionally, roof rails come as standard.

There is a choice of a 2.5 litre petrol engine that delivers 194 ps (143 kW) and a 338 ps (248 kW) 4.4 litre petrol engine. On the diesel front, there is a 2.5 litre 179 ps (132 kW) engine as well as 221 ps (163 kW) 3.0 litre unit. Three gearboxes are on offer; a six-speed manual comes as standard, with a six-speed sequential and a six-speed automatic as optional.

The car is lighter than the old model with an all-aluminium front structure that helps save 50 kg in weight. There is run-flat tyre technology on cars with 17 and 18 inch allow wheels, plus a tyre puncture warning system, dynamic stability control and dynamic traction control.
