Toyota builds hybrid Camry in Australia and Thai plants

10 June 2008

Toyota is to make the hybrid version of its Camry saloon at its plant in Australia. The company announced the move at a conference with the Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd.

In a second announcement, Toyota says it will make 9,000 hybrid Camrys a year at its Thai plant. And, also in Thailand, it is to increase production of diesel engines at its Siam Toyota Manufacturing offshoot - see separate story here.

The group intends to make 10,000 a year of the Camry Hybrid at the Altona works in the state of Victoria, starting from 2010. The Thai hybrid Camry capacity will come on line next year.

Toyota Motor Corporation president Katsuaki Watanabe said: "Australians are keenly aware of environmental issues including global warming and we are confident the Camry Hybrid will be well received. Toyota intends to make further efforts towards popularising hybrid vehicles."
