Ficosa and Omron to make driver assistance systems

22 July 2008

Spanish components group Ficosa has formed a joint venture with the Japanese electronics and parts group Omron to develop advanced driver assistance systems for vehicles.

The new joint venture will have its headquarters in Germany and will be 50:50 owned.

Systems that the company will look to develop include blind spot detection, lane departure warning, parking assistance, start-up warning and rearview monitors. It also aims to develop recognition technology for road signs, other vehicles, front lights and pedestrians.

Omron has some automotive electronics business but is involved primarily in sensors and automation sectors where it has also developed vision systems for automated recognition in factories.
