Modular floor console is a first, says JCI

December 2006

Following the introduction of modules for interior systems such as doors and cockpits, Johnson Controls is claiming a first with a modular floor console for Volvo. They are fitted to the S80 model, and accommodate different a number of options such as trim finish and vehicle equipment level.

The magnesium support that the components are assembled on to also performs a structural role as part of the Volvo SIPS side impact protection system.

Johnson Controls says that “the modularity, the magnesium structure and the delivery as a single unit directly to the assembly line of the customer is a completely new approach.”

Inside story: Johnson floor module underpins the Volvo S80

The module includes the centre tunnel, armrest, gear shift lever, airbag sensor, ashtray, cupholders and the “free floating” centre stack with audio and HVAC controls and the driver information screen. The centre stack can be specified with a plastic, wood or aluminium finish, increasing the number of modules in the production mix.

Modules for luxury models also have audio system controls for the rear seat passengers.

Modules are supplied lineside to the Torslanda plant, fully pre-wired, on a “just in sequence” basis. Each weighs approximately 11kg including the two front side panels from Volvo.

A robot fits the module into the car through a side door. Initial positioning is provided by two pins in the upper area of the floor console and one bracket on the tunnel, leaving the assembly worker to tighten the five M8 retaining screws.

The structure at the core of the module is a single diecasting in magnesium, chosen for its low density, and includes a crash box to absorb energy from side impacts via elements of the lower seat frame.

Johnson Controls also supplies Volvo with floor consoles for the S60, V/XC 70 and XC90.
