Composites halve the weight of suspension strut in study

11 September 2009

Components group ZF is using the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show to demonstrate a concept ultralight suspension damper that is half the weight of a conventiional aluminium lightweight damper of the same performance.

The new fibre composite damper is intended for use in micro and mini cars, says ZF.

The design, which is part of a study of an entire suspension strut and wheel carrier by ZF Sachs, gives weight savings by substituting composites for steel parts in areas such as the piston rod and by integrating functions. Components such as the spring cap become unnecessary with this approach, the group says.

Dr Peter Ottenbruch, head of the powertrain and suspension components division at ZF Sachs, said: "With our study on plastic suspension struts, we want to show above all how much potential there still is in terms of lightweight chassis."

ZF says this approach may also be considered for larger vehicles.
