Bosch is claiming that its new inertial sensor is the world's first micro unit that can simultaneously monitor two acceleration or inclination axes and one axis of rotation. The SM1540 is intended to be used in electronic stability control systems to provide information on yaw and lateral acceleration. Bosch will also make a version that has only the yaw sensor, called the SMG540. With only two of the signals being used in standard stability systems such as Bosch's ESP, the third sensor signal, measuring acceleration or inclination in the direction of travel, can be used for other applications such as the hill hold function or for fuel saving in cars with automatic transmissions. The sensor is also being used in Bosch's airbag control unit where it can replace the sensor previously integrated into the airbag itself. The sensor fits in a small SOIC16w housing measuring 10.3 x 10.3 x 2.65 mm. Large scale production of the sensor is scheduled for next year.
