| High-temperature, plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings from
specialist company Zircotec provide lightweight and highly durable thermal
barriers suitable for a wide range of highly aggressive environments.
The technology was originally developed for the British nuclear industry
and has now been adopted across a wide range of motorsport series including
Formula One. The metals coating system, which has been used extensively
on exhaust systems, has now been supplemented by a new coating that protects
carbon composite materials.
Both technologies are expected to find an increasing range of applications
across diverse industries where a tough, durable thermal barrier is required.
The coating protects heat sensitive components, improving safety and potentially
increasing engine performance in vehicle applications.
