Plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings from Zircotec

June 2006

High-temperature, plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings from specialist company Zircotec provide lightweight and highly durable thermal barriers suitable for a wide range of highly aggressive environments.

The technology was originally developed for the British nuclear industry and has now been adopted across a wide range of motorsport series including Formula One. The metals coating system, which has been used extensively on exhaust systems, has now been supplemented by a new coating that protects carbon composite materials.

Both technologies are expected to find an increasing range of applications across diverse industries where a tough, durable thermal barrier is required. The coating protects heat sensitive components, improving safety and potentially increasing engine performance in vehicle applications.

Zircotec’s other areas of expertise also include plasma sprayed ceramic coatings for metals and composites, and thermal management in motorsport and other demanding applications.
